The ancients believed that amethyst, the birthstone of February, would protect its wearer from the effects of drunkenness. It comes from the Greek word "amethustos" that means "not drunken."

This ring has a large, oval cut, faceted light purple amethyst weighing just under 8 carats held in place by four gold prongs. The shank (band) is split and has an elegant asymmetrical flowing line motif.
